Description
Thebae is upset by a new religion. The altars of the ancient gods became silent. The wisdom of the native priests fades away. The Thebans’ minds are possessed by a god who came from the East. Not one is his name, not from one century, not only from the present or from the past centuries. Alone among all his people, the king Pentheus dares to resist. To him, the god promises much: may he submit his human dignity, abandon the native usages, forget the fatherland’s deities: may he stay with him. If he does that, he will be powerful. If he does that, he will get eternal prosperity. A god as his enemy. His enemy’s weapon, his own mother. His sole weapon, his reason. No allies, or few. Victory separated from glory. The tale of a tree which fought against the storm and was betrayed by its own roots.
