Jacopo Rubini

Jacopo Rubini, born in Viterbo in 1939, holds a Ph.D. in Christian and Classical Literature and teaches Greek and Latin language and literature at the “Mariano Buratti” Classical High School (Viterbo) and at the Pontifical Institute of Higher Studies in Latin—that is, the Faculty of Christian and Classical Literature—of the Pontifical Salesian University (Rome). He is also a full member of the Academy for the Promotion of Latin, for which he oversees the editing and publication of the weekly journal Nuntii Latini Breves. What will become abundantly clear, however, from the pages of the very booklet you now hold in your hands is that Jacopo Rubini is also a vigorous and tireless advocate of Latin teaching methods commonly referred to as “natural” or even “direct.” In short: he is convinced that no language can be truly and fully learned unless one knows how to make proper use of the materials with which it is being learned. To this end, to facilitate access to the Latin language for students and enthusiasts, Jacopo Rubini himself has founded a sort of online “haven” for the living Latin language, which he has called “Officina Latinitatis”, Here you can find new and enjoyable material to read in Latin every month (drawn from contemporary times and more recent eras).
In conclusion, Professor Rubini has also written several books and pamphlets on various topics, both in Italian and in Latin, with a particular focus on Renaissance Latin literature, medieval history, and what are now referred to as issues in language teaching. Furthermore, if anyone would like to read his haiku (Japanese poems)—which he usually composes in Latin for his own enjoyment—they can visit Jacopo Rubini's Instagram page, “Opaca Fronde”, where, of course, he presents himself as a huge fan of all things Japanese. He faithfully follows Arcadius Avellanus, the Master of Latin Culture, as he loves to proclaim to the world.
