Maxentius restored Rome's lost dignity and worked to restore the Mediterranean basin to the centre of political and cultural power.
\nHe dreams of a welcoming and firm empire, founded on the mos maiorum, striving for splendour and dedicated to improvement. It is not an easy task in the dark times in which he finds himself living, but he is certainly not intimidated. Indeed, Maxentius models himself on and cherishes demigods, sons of mortal women and gods, who - through deep morality and strenuous struggle to overcome their limitations - fully attain the divine. Figures such as Asclepius, Hercules and that Christ whom he would like to include in the Pax Romana and whom his mother venerates inspire him.
\nBut the empire has changed, it has become dark and restless like the limes: the world in which Constantine grew up is like this. Ruthless, belligerent, determined to maintain order and impart a pragmatic and authoritarian vision to the state, Constantine is the opposite of Maxentius. For the ruler, there is no room for sentiment nor time for philosophy. A thousand reasons make the two contenders each other's nemesis, yet they are two sides of the long transition to a new world that began in the 4th century.
